Another Transfer week done! Thank goodness…..this was a stressful one. Enough said on that!!
Driving experiences here are crazy! Yesterday afternoon I had my first real close call with an accident. I was turning left, in the right of the 2 left turn lanes, turning from Capitol to Snell. The person to the left of me, in turning, turned into my lane! Almost sideswiped me, but I moved to the right fast. Today I almost rear-ended someone. We were headed home from church, on Capitol, and I was in the left of 3 lanes. She was in the far right, just barely ahead of me. She changed lanes and just moved from the far right across 2 lanes right in front of me…..I slammed on my brakes to avoid hitting her. Luckily, there were no cars behind me or I would have been hit from behind. Oh, plus one thing some drivers do…..they drive like 10 mph less than the speed limit! And then others drive 10 miles over the speed limit.....so you just don't know what to expect. There is crazy driving all the time here. If we make it through this mission without an accident, it will be a miracle! I told Gary the kind of driving you have to do around here I would describe as aggressive/defensive. Aggressive in the sense that you have to make moves quickly in lane changes, and defensive because of the crazy drivers!
Gary told me that nothing surprises him anymore on the driving around here. The other day he said he saw someone in the far left lane of 3 lanes going straight plus a turning right lane, stopped at a light and the far left driver suddenly decides to turn right and just turns right in front of the lanes stopped and joins up with those turning right!
Yesterday, we headed to Oakland, taking the Clayton’s with
us, and attended the BYU Living Legends dance performance. It was a fun evening! Late getting home, though, so we have been
tired today. The BYU Living Legends have
dancers from Native Americans, Latin Americans, and Polynesian dancers.
Today I gave my first talk in church. I ended up cutting a lot out of it because it
is so hard to determine how long the translation takes. It was on families.
This
last week, we got 2 new Vietnamese Elders, so our “boys”, Elder Bruggeman and
Elder Hullinger, are no longer companions, but are trainers for the other 2. They all live together in an apartment.
The 2 new elders are:
Elder Kwon and Elder Ho. I think
one of them is a Vietnamese native. I
will have to look up in their files to make sure of that.
The
Vietnamese program is picking up. They
had several investigators at church today.
We have our annual Tet festival coming up in less than 2 weeks now. Feb. 8th starting at noon. It is a Stake activity, not just a Branch activity.
Today was a beautiful, sunny day, 70 degrees. When we came home from church and had lunch,
I went outside in capris and sat by the pool in a pool lounge chair, listening
to my ipod and getting some sun, and fell asleep……it just felt so nice! During the week, I just never get to see the
sun, in the office all day. I miss it!
Well, that’s it for now!
