Christmas 2013 week

December 29, 2013
Today is Kaden’s birthday.  We called his dad’s phone to see if we could talk to him, but he is with his mom today.  Jeff said he will have him tomorrow, so we can talk to him them.
What a wonderful week we had!  Like I said in the last post, Tuesday morning, we met at the San Felipe building  at 6:30 a.m. to fix breakfast for the whole mission…..all about 280 of us!  Plus a few extras who came to help.  We had steaks, eggs, pancakes, and fruit.  Oh, and there were pop tarts for those missionaries who prefer that!  I had never had steak for breakfast before, but it was good!  After the breakfast, there was a gift exchange by zone.  It was the game where you go around and take turns taking a gift, and when it is your turn, you can either take a new one, or one from someone else, but after 3 times, that gift was no longer in play.  It can be fun, because some gifts may look appealing but not be that great really!  The gifts were all to be $5 or less, so it was just the thought of giving that counted, plus the game to play.  After that, we went to the chapel for a devotional.  It was a very spiritual meeting.  Some of the missionaries sang, and we have some VERY good singers, I must say!
After the devotional, we headed back to the office.  Gary went to clean up…he had put on levi’s to help cook the steaks, and smelled like smoke,  so he changed back to his good clothes.  That evening, we Skyped with Jeff and his kids, as he said that would be the best time. Well, he said we could early morning on Christmas Day, but we planned on sleeping in somewhat.
Wednesday, Christmas Day, we spent the morning either Skyping or Facetiming our kids and grandkids.  It was so neat to see everyone!!  Then, that afternoon, we headed over to the Crawford’s to have Christmas dinner.  They had a houseful!  2 of their kids and families were there, plus us, the Clayton’s, Kim Loan-Le and Jimmy Miner from our branch, and 7 young missionaries I think it was.  When we got there, on pair of missionaries was there already skyping home.  We had brought a laptop and an ipad so when the others arrived, they could use them to also talk with their families, since Christmas is one of the 2 times a year that they can.  After a bit, the others arrived, and we had kids skyping in several  areas of the house at once…..which, unfortunately, was a drain on the wifi so the connections weren’t so good.  Dinner was fabulous!  Turkey, ham, smoked salmon, different kinds of potatoes, veggies, rolls, lots of desserts!  I was stuffed!!  We sure appreciate good friends like the Bob and Linda Crawford who open their house to all of us missionaries.  Good food and good conversations with good friends!  Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay too late….had to get to bed early to get up to go to work the next day.
Friday after work at the office, we headed to our church building for the baptism of a young boy in our branch….Clark Nguyen.  He is the son of Ann, grandson of Nga.  After the baptism, we had a branch social.  After we ate and visited just a little bit, we left—BYU was playing football on TV and Gary wanted to go home to watch part of it.
Saturday, we did the usual cleaning and laundry.  Then headed out for lunch.  I wanted to try In N Out burger, which we had heard so much about.  There was a long line, but after we ate we said, not that impressive, so we probably won’t go back again.  I wanted to check out Kohl’s which was right near there, to get a new top.  Well, there were good sales on, so I got several!  Then we headed over to the mall to shop at Penney’s…..Gary wanted to get some more pants, and we had a gift card to use too.  Good sales there as well!  Then  home for dinner and relaxation.  I had stroganoff cooking in the crockpot.  Oh, I forgot.  One other thing we did was go for a 2 mile walk before we headed out to lunch.  It was the first time in a long time for me to walk like that.  I have got to get back in the habit of exercising again.  I have gained some weight from sitting in an office all day.  But, I have just been so tired, I would rather sleep in the extra half hour than get up to exercise.  But, time to make New Year’s resolutions, and start the weight loss!!
This week will be similar to last week, in that we work Monday and Tuesday, then Wednesday off, then work Thursday and Friday.
Even though Christmas was different this year in not seeing family in person, and missing the Yearsley family Christmas party in Swan Lake, and not having snow (I REALLY enjoyed that part!!.....it has been in the mid 60’s here), we are grateful to be serving this mission.  It is hard at times, working a full time job in the office like this, but we know that it is something that is definitely needed.  Senior missionaries are needed in several areas of missionary work.  In this mission, besides the office couples, we have a couple who are assigned to the institute for a young single adult center…the husband teaches some classes at the institute, and they put on a dinner every Wednesday night at the center for the young people.  I think they said they plan on about 100 to feed each Wednesday.  We have 2 couples who are MLS missionaries….Member Leadership Support.  They are assigned to wards and help in whatever way is needed there.  Even the office couples are assigned to wards/branches.  We help in the Vietnamese Branch, teaching classes, and the other office couple is assigned to a Mid-Single adult ward.    We also have 2 single senior Sisters who work at the Church Employment office.  And, we are getting a couple soon who will be assigned to the Fort Ord military base.  So many seniors are needed!  Even if just for 6 months, which one of our MLS couples are doing.  They are an older couple who really wanted to serve, but didn’t know if they could handle too long of a time.  One couple who was here when we arrived but have since gone home were assigned to help the Spanish people get started on their genealogy.  Another couple who have since gone home helped in the ASL program.  Just so many ways for seniors to serve.  We have learned that some friends of ours from home (the Fullmers) have received their mission call to serve in Louisville, Kentucky, and will start their mission towards the end of February.  They are going to serve a MLS mission.  Another couple (the Hatch’s) are waiting for their call still.  This is an experience we are so glad we get to have.  We have made some great friends in the branch and in the mission.  We love the opportunity to get to know these young missionaries, and hope to remain friends with them and the other senior missionaries for years to come…..and hope they will stop in and see us in Arimo when we are all back to our regular lives and they happen to pass through the area.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you….our new friends and our old friends and family who we are away from right now.  May this New Year of 2014 be good for all!  And may we always strive to keep the Savior in our lives, and live as He would have us do.

This is a picture at the end of the meal, with (left to right)  Elder and Sister Clayton, Sister and Elder Yearsley, Jimmy Miner and Kim Loan-Le from our Vietnamese Branch.  I took this picture off of Linda Crawford's Facebook page....thanks for being such a good photographer, Linda!

December 22, 2013

Today is the Sunday before our 1st Christmas away from home.  Yesterday was the Yearsley family Christmas party in Swan Lake.  We only had Jeff and his kids who attended from our family.  Today is Scott’s birthday.  He is 35 today.  We just got off the phone and had a good visit with him and Kyler…Tristan was busy on the computer, and only  talked briefly…..guess we aren’t missed too much!
This past week at work was a nice week.  I had decided that I wanted to make Shreveport Gumbo and take it to work to share.  We usually eat it during Christmas break during our pinochle tournament at Hope’s house….we each bring a soup to share.  It went over well at the office.  The office workers all had some, and a few missionaries who stopped in.  Everyone said they loved it…..I know that WE enjoyed it!  It was a delicious change from our usual lunch foods.  The Clayton’s said it was a good idea, and they will bring a stew one day to share.
Yesterday, we went to Chick fil A, which is probably 10 miles from us, up in the Milpitas area.  We just decided to have something different for lunch.  While eating our chicken sandwiches, Gary said, well this is our chicken dinner while the family eats theirs at the Christmas party!  While up that way, Gary showed me 2 of our mission apartments.  One is an old, old house, probably a mansion in the old days, that has been converted into apartments.  The floors slope in it, so a very unique place to stay for missionaries. Gary said he would have loved having that experience as a missionary, staying in a place like that.  The other house is a house with 2 orange trees in the front yard.  It belongs to a member, and the missionaries who stay there are required to pick the fruit and deliver some to her every couple of weeks I think.
Today in Relief Society, the lesson was on faith, and one sister, Nga, told of a miraculous experience she has had that has made her faith stronger.  This is what she said.  Some time ago, she had a pain in her neck and in her shoulder that made life pretty miserable.  Not having a lot of money, she just dealt with it, until one day it seemed more than she could bear.  So she called President Shelton and Brother Bui to come give her a blessing.  The next day, she went to do her job as a caretaker for a woman who has cancer.  That person needed to go and see the acupuncturist, so she took her.  She said that while she was there, she was looking around the waiting room, and seeing people of different nationalities sitting there, and a thought came to her to talk to the acupuncturist, who she referred to as the Master.  She mentioned to him about her neck.  She said he took her wrist, and said to her, you don’t sleep well.  She said she hadn’t for years, and was amazed he could tell.  Then, he had her lay on the table and put pins in her ankle, then told her to move her neck.  She did….the pain was gone!  Some time later, I don’t know how long, she called and went back to him.  She said, my neck is now 90% better, but my shoulder still hurts.  He said, I can only fix one thing at a time.  So then he did the pins in her ankle again, and told her to move her arm, and the pain was gone in the shoulder!  She was so amazed at this, that she told friends of hers how good he was.  She said this was only the second time she had ever gone for acupuncture, and the first time she ever had tried it, there was no success, so she didn’t believe in it.  However, for her, this was a miracle, as she had lived with the pain for so long.  Well, her friends went to him, and they didn’t get cured, and said, I thought you said he was so good, but he isn’t.  She said, she knows she was cured because of faith. She had faith to ask for the blessing, and faith as the acupuncturist was working on her, feeling that it wasn’t a coincidence that she went there with the woman she was helping the day after receiving a blessing.  She said that every time she thinks back to that time, she knows it was a miracle for her, and that faith is required for healings to happen.
Elder Atkinson and his family came back to the branch to visit today.  He was our Zone Leader when we first arrived, and went home the first transfer after we got here, so we didn’t get to know him very well.  He had been in the Vietnamese program, but by the time we got here, he was in an English speaking ward, as the President likes to move missionaries the last month to English from their language that they have been speaking.
I gave the scripture in Sacrament meeting today.  In our branch, there is always a scripture shared at the beginning before the talks.  Probably because we have no youth speakers to speak.  I did Isaiah 9:6, because of it being Christmas this week.  After church, Brother Tam told me that the scripture he gave in Branch Council meeting this morning was also from Isaiah.  It was Isaiah 43:5…..I thought it was very interesting.  It says:  “Fear not, for I am with thee:  I will bring thy seed from the east and gather thee from the west.”  Very interesting since these people have come from the Eastern countries and moved to the Western country of the United States.
Today I made Fudgy Bon Bons to take to work to share.  I have been in the mood to make some of our usual Christmas time goodies, and we know plenty of hungry missionaries who like to share them!  I made some cinnamon rolls too.  Gives me pleasure to do things like this on a Sunday afternoon while Gary is watching football.  We both got our naps in too.  So, tomorrow, lots of treats to take to the office!  Oh, and the schedule for this week is this:  Monday, regular work.  Tuesday, we meet at the San Felipe building (which is where we meet for church) at 6:30 a.m. to cook breakfast for the whole mission.  I guess all the senior missionaries help.  The menu is steak, eggs and pancakes.  After breakfast is a devotional meeting, then split into zones for a gift exchange…..$5 or less gift.  After that, it is back to the office to finish the day as usual.  Wednesday, Christmas day, we are off.  We have been invited to the Crawford’s for dinner again.  We plan on skyping or face timing or just chatting on the phone with our kids and grandkids before heading to the Crawford’s house.

Thursday and Friday are regular work days, with Friday evening being a Branch activity.  Clark Nguyen is getting baptized (his is Ann’s son, Nga’s grandson), and after that is the Branch Christmas party, potluck.  I just signed up for dessert, as I won’t have time to do much before we head over to the church after work, so I will bring brownies again.

I heard that Emilie was doing better this week, so that was good news!  And Sophie was changed to a splint instead of the cast.
We have enjoyed getting packages and Christmas cards in the mail from family, and love seeing the Christmas pictures that our grandkids drew/colored for us and then sent to us to use as decorations for our apartment.
We have had plenty of Christmas goodies given to us, too!  We both need to work at getting more exercise!!

We wish all of you a Merry Christmas!  We didn’t get cards sent out this year, but please know that we love and miss you all!

Tết costume

The  Vietnamese New Year is called tet.  It is going to be celebrated in the stake here on Feb. 8th.  Sister Kim asked me last Sunday if I would like to dress in traditional Vietnamese costume for it, I said yes!  She said, could I stay after church so I could be measured.  I did.  She said she had a family member going back to Vietnam soon, and they would have an outfit made for me there and bring it back. I said I would be happy to pay for it, but she said that several sisters were going in on it.  When the celebration is here, I will tell all about it and post pictures!
